Are these decorative or functional? Saw them on several houses in a neighborhood that I recently drove through.

  1. My guess is that there are steel links running around the structure, and those circles are where concrete was poured around the ends of each tie. If that is the case, then yes, they are structural; without them, the building would collapse.

  3. These are on a gable wall, which has little structural value, and given the size of the masonry area, it’s unlikely that they connect it to the structure.

    Edit: Probably just for the sake of aesthetics.
