  1. At the very least, your coworkers think you have a cool career. In fact, you’re a high-end customer translation service between clients and builders, and it’s all your fault, including the price of the tile they choose and the delay caused by the freight truck that crashed on the highway.

  2. It’s ideal to hear nonsense from builders and owners! I work with a lot of architects, and I always remind them that part of their task is to create problems for me to solve, so if there’s any nudging and elbowing going on, that’s nice because it means we’re working on something interesting.

  3. The kicker is that you should try to work for a company that creates architecture, not just houses. If you want to make money, you’ll need a side hustle that puts your architectural design expertise to use in something other than architecture.

  4. I’m not an architect, but I found some videos on YouTube that I thought you would enjoy. This weekend, I’m going to create an underground house with a heated swimming pool using only natural resources from the environment, and the video was 29 minutes long; granted, it’s my first time, so I expect I’ll be able to finish it in an hour or less.

  5. Tap dancing is a fun way to pass the time. This is exactly what I studied during my first two and a half years of architecture school. And it’s a great example of why I’m not an architect because I don’t have an architecture degree.

  6. The issue appears to be the wood plate connecting directly to the spread footing without a concrete stem wall to provide moisture security over time… and to compensate for the debilitating debt vertical load.

  7. I’m sitting here, 25 years later, trying to handle the workload of three people on a complex project by myself for less money than anyone else on the job, even the guys on site who think I’m an overpaid jerk. I mean, what’s not to like about that?

  8. The section about having a low salary relative to those in my profession really hits home.

Architects have been grossly underpaid for the past four decades, ever since they altered the way building costs are measured.
