In 1930 the Indiana Bell building was rotated 90°. Over a month, the 22-million-pound structure was moved 15 inch/hr… all while 600 employees still worked there. There was no interruption to gas, heat, electricity, water, sewage, or the telephone service they provided. No one inside felt it move.

  1. I know I should Google it myself, but how the eff am I supposed to know? I have a lot of concerns.

What is the reason for this?

    What is the goal?

    Isn’t it common?

    Is it outdated?

  2. People at the time probably believed that incidents like this would become commonplace. I can imagine them hoping that in a century’s time, all of the buildings will be drivable/movable in some way.

  3. And some people seriously doubt that ancient monuments were constructed by humans. Not to say that aliens or whatever helped, because they certainly did, but the heavy lifting was all done by us.

  4. But, seriously, can we all take a moment to understand how ridiculous this is? During the whole time the building was going, the workforce continued to work with running water and gas. This is something I could never imagine happening in today’s world, let alone 70 years ago.

  5. I have a friend whose father works in the construction industry; I can’t imagine moving a house when everyone is still inside in today’s world. Her father has shown me videos of failed moves that result in buildings collapsing into dust. This video, on the other hand, is insanely awesome, and the fact that they were able to pull it off in the 1930s is incredible.
