  1. I recall taking an urban design class while I was in college. I went home right away and tried to incorporate everything I’d learned into Cities Skylines.

    It didn’t work out.

  2. With the exception of the current Simcity, which is bad, and the mobile game Simcity Construct It, which is even worse, cities: Skylines is the way to go.

However, all of the city-building games use obsolete Corbusian zoning concepts, and I’d like to see someone do better.

  3. Here’s an urban planner. The initial Sim City had a major influence on my career path. The game consumed countless hours of my life. Until my freshman year of college, I had no idea what urban planning was. The majority of people enjoyed constructing cities and then watching them be destroyed by natural disasters. That was everything I despised.

  4. Growing up, I was a huge fan of SC. I earned a bachelor’s degree in urban design. I’ve gotten a career in Economic Development. I’ve never made a decision based on SC’s advice. Maybe it’s just me, but video games do not qualify you for a work.

  5. Many people are unaware of the impact that a game can have on people. Portal may have spawned a whole generation of physicists or people working in related fields. Some people may choose a sport because they enjoy a specific sporting event. It’s amazing how much good can be achieved with games, and how they can serve as a gateway to different career paths.

  6. I won’t deny it: SimCity 3000 and SimCity 4 are what brought me into this line of work. I am grateful for that.

Both games rely on out-of-date traffic-planning concepts as their primary gameplay mechanic. Cities Skylines is better, but I’m looking forward to the citybuilder, which will allow you to design a city without cars.

But, hey, whatever. This was my garbage, as is everyone else’s.

  7. Yes, that is right. I decided to pursue a career as an urban planner. Ten of those years were spent in Abu Dhabi/Dubai, which was almost like playing a SimCity game.

  8. I became a talented chef, but there’s a reason I live in Montreal’s downtown core and wouldn’t trade it for anything. It’s interesting to learn how a city operates, from 17th century stone churches to the new glass office buildings.
